For Medical Transcriptionists ·
What you'll accomplish
You'll use Otter.ai to create a HIPAA-safe transcription practice environment — recording yourself dictating mock medical reports, letting Otter transcribe them, and then comparing your dictation to Otter's output. This reveals exactly where AI stumbles on medical terminology (the same places humans do) and helps you build speed without touching actual patient audio.
What you'll need
What you should see: Your Otter dashboard with a "New conversation" button and your usage stats.
Before you record, you need something to dictate. Use the Level 1 anatomy primer prompt to generate a mock medical report:
What you should see: A realistic-sounding medical report you can read aloud with proper medical vocabulary.
What you should see: Otter transcribes your dictation in near real-time, with a text version appearing alongside the audio playback.
Common Otter errors on medical dictation:
What you should see: A transcript with clear gaps between where AI performs well (common words, clear speech) and where it struggles (specialty vocabulary, connected words).
What you should see: A targeted list of medical terms that need extra attention — grounded in actual AI behavior, not guesswork.
